While I was growing up, my parents got two daily newspapers. Early in the morning a morning newspaper from the city of Pittsburgh was delivered. Late in the afternoon, the Butler Eagle, the newspaper from the nearby county seat, the newspaper from the city of Butler, was delivered
The city of Pittsburgh was a stronghold of the Democratic party. At that time the Democratic party in the US favored civil rights and integration of blacks and whites. Ensuring that all citizens have a roof over thier head, enough to eat and access to good schools, as well as giving labor unions more power, were also goals of the Democratic party at that time. The morning paper from Pittsburgh reported the news with a clear slant favorizing politicians and policies of the Democratic party.
Butler, PA was a very conservative place. Most elected positions in the city of Butler, as well as in the surrounding area, were held by members of the Republican party. The Republican party at that time wanted a strong military, but was against increasing other government spending, especially against spending tax money on social programs. Conservative politics and politicians were favored in most articles printed in the Butler Eagle.
The morning newspaper reported positively about Democratic politicians and positively about liberal politics, but bashed Republicans and conservative ideas. The late afternoon newspaper bashed Democrats, but wrote favorably about Republicans and conservative ideas.
I think reading these two daily newspapers report the same stories totally differently, made me weary of believing any news reports. It gave me a healthy suspician for all news reported in the media.
